Mountain Leader Assessment Prep
Your Mountain Leader Assessment daunting 5-days including navigation, rope work, weather knowledge, local knowledge and above all a good, safe leader. These days are adapted around you and if you want 1:1 days HK Adventuring can help provide this. Likewise if there is a group of you we can cover whatever it is you'd like more confidence with.
Below you'll see a range of days we offer, but we understand everyone has their own questions, so feel free to enquire about what we can offer to tailor your experience. All workshops are run in Eryri (Snowdonia), Lake District and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).

All courses have instructor : participant ratios, at HK Adventuring if you have a larger group then we will provide additional qualified staff.

Steep Ground day
Steep ground day is a mountain journey over some scramble terrain, designed to test your leadership, route finding, and group management. This day will encompass all of the above along with navigation. We will revise rope work but it is assumed you have a good grasp of this. If you are wanting a more rope specific day then look at the 'Ropes and Emergency Procedures' day. Be prepared for a long day with lots of decision making.

Mock Expedition
The expedition is a tough 3-days often at the end of your assessment, carrying a heavy bag and being super focussed.

On our mock exped we do 2-day and 3-day expeds, we would usually recommend the 3-day exped as we can cover all aspects of your assessment from rope work to different scales of map and two nights of night nav. However, we can condense this into the 2-day package if required.

Ropes and Emergency Procedures
Rope work is often daunting for many, and often those that aren't climbers may struggle, but with HK Adventuring we go through everything ropes! We start the day with a short walk to some steep ground terrain to practice rope work for most/all of the day. We may intertwine this with a mountainous walk if time is with us, but the main learning objective is everyone becomes autonomous with their rope skills.

Night Navigation
Navigating in the dark is really difficult if not well practised. Navigating in the dark uses completely different skills and senses to what you are usually used to. We will start with a short walk into an area during daylight before having a conversation regarding techniques.
Once the light is low enough we will start doing navigation legs and putting different techniques into practice. This will be a long evening but will provide confidence and practice ready for your assessment. Night navigation evenings will often start around 3/4pm and will usually finish around 12/1am depending on how we are doing as a group.

Navigation Day
Whether it is 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 map work you are wanting to practice, we can help you. Throughout the day we will revise different navigation methods as well as relocating. We will travel to small contour features and take in a beautiful mountain journey. This day really provides you with confidence ready for your assessment and hopefully some tactics to make your life easier on your assessment.
